On Brad's support during her medical procedure: "I knew through the surgeries that he was on my side and that this wasn't something where I was gonna feel less of a woman, because my husband wasn't gonna let that happen. To face these issues together and speak about them and talk about what it is to be human, I think can be a beautiful thing."
On their shared happiness: "[Brad] has expanded my life in ways I never imagined. We built a family. He is not just the love of my life, he is my family. I hold that very dear. I suppose what I've learned from Brad is to be able to have the kind of family whose happiness and well-being comes before your own. I'm very, very grateful to have such a loving family, and I wouldn't have that without him."
On how Brad is a real man: "I am very lucky with Brad. He is a real gentleman, but he is also a real man's man. He's got the wonderful balance of being an extraordinary, great, loving father, a very, very intelligent man and physically he's a real man in all things that it means."
On her respect for Brad: "I do think that I'm in a good partnership now . . . I think it just needed to be the right man. It's not just that I love being in Brad's company, which obviously I do, but it's that we both roll up our sleeves and take on what we care about in the same way. I have a lot of respect for him, and he helps me to be better and fight hard for things that I love."
On how they make their marriage work: "Brad and I have problems like any other couple. We have days when we drive each other absolutely mad, but the problems in the movie aren't our specific problems. When we first worked together, it was very different because we didn't really know each other and we were young, and it was really a fun film. So, we thought maybe By the Sea was going to be that kind of fun, but realized very quickly that it wasn't. So it was challenging [this time], but we made a private pact that we were going to try to be as open and honest and emotive as possible and give to each other as much as we could and, succeed or fail, we would just lay it bare."
