Every Key Featured in Netflix's Locke & Key — and What They Do

Based on the graphic novels by horror connoisseur Joe Hill, Netflix's Locke & Key follows the Locke children as they discover magical keys in their late father's old home. These keys aren't just whimsical antiques — they're capable of stirring up a lot of trouble, as the Lockes quickly learn on their misadventures. As the kids find out the otherworldly properties of the keys, a vengeful demon named Dodge tracks them closely to collect the keys for herself. While there are around 40 keys in the comics, we've only interacted with a handful of keys so far. The first season features 12, and the second season, released on Oct. 22, introduces seven new ones. From lighting up deadly fires to summoning shadow monsters, here are all the keys featured in the series and how they're used throughout.

01
Matchstick Key
Netflix

Matchstick Key

The Matchstick Key is the first key that appears in Locke & Key. More or less, it ignites fires, fast. Mark has it at the very beginning of the show. After finding out that Rendell has died, he kills himself with it so no one can get in his head, as he had been entrusted with knowing the key's locations. Later on, Dodge tracks it down and gives it to Sam Lesser, who uses it to break out of prison.

02
Anywhere Key
Netflix

Anywhere Key

In the first episode, Bode finds the Anywhere Key in Kinsey's bracelet, which was given to her by their father. He realizes that it has powers when he uses it to go to the ice cream shop. However, it can only be used to go to places that you've gone to before. Bode hands it over to Dodge to help his mother, but this enables Dodge to get out of the well and mess around in Matheson.

03
Mirror Key
Netflix

Mirror Key

Discovered by Bode in a sink, the Mirror Key can trap people in a dimension called the Prison of Self, which happens to Nina (who's portrayed in a heartbreaking performance by Scandal's Darby Stanchfield). The Locke kids rope Tyler into the mirror and rescue their mother.

04
Head Key
Netflix

Head Key

The Head Key is freaky stuff, activating when you stick it in the back of someone's head. Bode fishes it out of a vacuum cleaner bag and discovers that he can access his memories with it. The other Locke kids use it to remember moments with their dad. The Head Key can also remove traits and add knowledge — Kinsey takes out her fear, while Tyler learns all about British culture to attract his crush.

05
Ghost Key
Netflix

Ghost Key

Again, Bode explores Keyhouse and discovers the Ghost Key in an old portrait. The Ghost Key separates a person's soul from their body, allowing them to explore the manor premises as a spirit. However, it can only rejoin the soul to the physical world if the body is present. When Sam Lesser fiddles around with it, he unknowingly traps himself at Keyhouse as a ghost as his body is taken away.

06
Music Box Key
Everett Collection

Music Box Key

The holder of the Music Box Key, which fits into, unsurprisingly, a music box, can control anyone they want. Much to her brother and friends' shock, Kinsey uses it to torment Eden, a popular girl at her new high school.

07
Plant Key
Netflix

Plant Key

Kinsey and Tyler discover the Plant Key at the cemetery, fitting it in a glowing keyhole on a tree to activate it. They find out that it can access memories from the house in the form of glowing jars, such as the one where they see their father beat his friend Lucas.

08
Mending Key
Netflix

Mending Key

Bode finds the Mending Key in an old sewing machine. Nina discovers that when she uses the key with a special cabinet, it can repair broken things, such as her cup. However, it can't bring the dead back to life, since Nina is unable to revive her husband from the ashes in his urn.

09
Identity Key
Netflix

Identity Key

We see Dodge in possession of the Identity Key, which lets the wielder change into anyone they want. It allows her to turn into Lucas and manipulate Ellie. Dodge also uses it to turn into Gabe and transform Ellie into herself.

10
Omega Key
Netflix

Omega Key

While cleaning up his father's ashes, Tyler retrieves the Omega Key among the scattered pieces of the broken urn. (Their father had kept it in his head.) The key opens up the Black Door in the caves near Keyhouse that acts as a portal to a demon dimension. The Lockes open the door once more and inadvertently throw in Ellie, who they believe to be Dodge. Season two, here we come?

11
Echo Key
Netflix

Echo Key

After the tragedy that strikes Rendell and his friends, Ellie becomes the protector of the Identity and Echo Keys. The Echo Key can bring back the dead, but only as an echo of themselves, so to speak. Ellie uses it to revive Lucas. However, she instead brings back Dodge, who had possessed Lucas at the time of his death. Dodge's echo ends up at the bottom of the well at Keyhouse, until Bode gives Dodge the Anywhere Key.

12
Shadow Key
Netflix

Shadow Key

Bode finds the Shadow Key on the key ring his Uncle Duncan gave him when they moved to Keyhouse. But Dodge gets in possession of the key. With the Shadow Key and Crown of Shadows, Dodge, in a moment aptly soundtracked by Billie Eilish's "You Should See Me in a Crown," summons shadows to fight for her. However, the shadows get defeated with light.

13
Hercules Key
Netflix

Hercules Key

When paired with a leather belt, the Hercules Key gives the user superhuman strength like that of its namesake.

14
Small World Key
Netflix

Small World Key

The Small World Key doesn't fit inside the Keyhouse, but instead a small dollhouse replica of the house. The key allows people to see what is going on in the real Keyhouse in real time.

15
Memory Key
Netflix

Memory Key

Since adults are unable to retain memories of magic, Duncan created the Memory Key to keep his and the original Keepers of the Keys' memories alive. While Duncan's memories were temporarily removed when he was younger, Tyler eventually restores them in season two using the Memory Key.

16
Chain Key
Netflix

Chain Key

When paired with a small padlock, the Chain Key is able to capture someone as strong as a demon with an endless amount of chains.

17
Demon Key
Netflix

Demon Key

The Demon Key is a new key created in season two which has some terrifying repercussions. Not only does it create a gateway to the demon world, but turning the key in a person allows a demon to possess them.

18
Angel Key
Netflix

Angel Key

The Angel Key fits inside a harness that allows the person turning the key to grow wings and therefore give them the ability to fly.

19
Alpha Key
Netflix

Alpha Key

The Alpha Key proves to be one of the most important keys of season two as it helps counter the effects of the Demon Key. When used on a person being possessed by a demon, the Alpha Key destroys the creature. Although it frees the human host momentarily, they eventually die as well.
