Why Can't I Poop on Vacation? (And Tips to Help You Go)

You packed sunscreen, flip-flops, and your favorite bathing suit, but what you wish you could pack was your house with your own private bathroom. Why is it that when you're away from home, you immediately have issues using the bathroom? Believe it or not, it's not uncommon that traveling can lead to constipation. A disruption of your daily routine, travel anxiety, jet lag, or a change in diet is enough to leave you feeling bloated and uncomfortable. Here are some tips to help you stay more regular on your trip, so the only thing you'll have to worry about is what time to head to the beach.

  1. Eat right: Vacations are all about letting go and indulging, but you want to try to eat as closely to your regular diet as possible. Be sure to also get your fill of fiber-rich fruit, veggies, and whole grains. If you're worried it will be hard to find the right foods on vacation, pack some snacks you can nosh on while you're away from home.
  2. Margaritas are not water: Poolside cocktails are a definite perk of vacation, but alcohol has the ability to mess up your digestion. In addition to the cocktails, be sure to drink lots of water as well — a good rule of thumb is to drink a glass of water after every alcoholic drink you consume. Staying hydrated helps keep your system flowing.
  3. Move to keep things moving: Exercising, as you've experienced, can also help you go, so even though you're there to rest and relax, throw in some hiking, swimming, beach yoga, or a bike ride.
  4. Make time to try: Set aside time each day and do a little routine — whether it's drinking a hot cup of coffee or hot lemon water — to help assist you on your mission.
  5. Inhale, exhale, repeat: Whether it be anxiety about missing flights or dealing with family, stressful situations can freeze up your digestive system. Some of this can't be avoided, but plan ahead for as much as you can to make your travels as calm as possible. Take advantage of yoga rooms in airports, take a class at a studio in the place you're visiting, or do these yoga poses to relieve digestive woes. If yoga isn't your thing, take a warm bath, get a massage, or find times to meditate in the morning or in your seat on the plane.
