Craving Chocolate on Your Period Is For Real, Dietitian Confirms

Is a regularly timed, insatiable chocolate craving your first sign of PMS? For many women, the desire for chocolate during their menstrual cycle is seriously powerful, and almost always associated with pelvic cramping.

And while there's some debate within the scientific community about whether cravings signify a nutrient deficiency, Nutritionist Lisa Eberly, RD, says this craving is for real. "Our body craves magnesium when we have any kind of muscle cramping, and eating chocolate soothes cramps." Because of the soothing, healing properties chocolate can have, women tend to crave it emotionally, as well. It's a comfort food unlike any other (but we're not complaining).

This translates to cravings beyond the monthly cycle. Magnesium and chocolate cravings can occur when you're experiencing any other kind of cramp, or even an eye twitch.

Another bonus of chocolate on your period? The caffeine levels can soothe a headache, which is another common side effect. Not like you needed an excuse for chocolate, but now you can totally back it up, because science.
