Crave Hard Workouts When You Travel? Get Cheap Day Passes to Local Gyms With This App

Zeamo

Ah, hotel gyms. Don't you just love working out in a closet? The stuffy air, the one creaky elliptical, that little strip of floor where you can almost squeeze in a plank. They get the job done in a pinch, but most hotels obviously aren't going to be able to provide the same space and equipment as a regular gym. And sure, you don't always need to work out when you're traveling, but if you're on the road a lot for work or just trying to keep up a regular training regimen on vacation, it might be a priority.

One solution? Zeamo. It's an app on iOS and Android that allows you to explore local gyms (over 25,000 of them) in major metropolitan areas all over the globe through a simple pass on your phone. The app offers two options: a monthly subscription plan run through your employer (which is great if you travel frequently for your job) and a "day pass" option if you're using it on your own. What's great about that day pass: it's purely pay-per-visit, with no monthly or sign-up fee.

If you're as financial-commitment-phobic as I am, that flexibility is a big draw. I got my first-ever gym membership a few months ago, and went back and forth for so long because the year-long membership felt like a huge commitment. You don't have this issue with Zeamo. It's free to download, make an account, and scroll through gym options in different cities; you only lay down your money when you've chosen a gym. It's also a nice option for trying out new facilities in your own city without a long-term commitment. Zeamo offers daily, weekly, and monthly pass options for users, though specific gyms might not offer each choice.

The app uses your current location to show partner gyms near you, or you can enter in a zip code if you're searching for options in other areas, like your travel destinations. You can filter by distance, price, activities (like Pilates, HIIT, yoga, or personal training), and amenities (everything from lockers to towel service to babysitting). This was really helpful; I was able to filter and find a gym with a pool, in case I wanted to swim laps.

Zeamo Pricing

Zeamo Pricing

The app's pricing was reasonable. The gym I tried was $13 for a day pass, and the other options in my area ranged from $10-$20, though they can get up to $90 for the more exclusive clubs. Another perk: a Zeamo rep told us that some passes are discounted. My $13 pass for Active Sports Clubs, for example, is usually $25, according to their website. You can also purchase a pass in advance and hold onto it for up to a month before activating it, which is helpful if you're planning ahead for a trip.

How to Use a Zeamo Pass

Using the pass was easy, too; you just tap it and confirm that you want to use it that day. There's a countdown timer that lets you know how long you have use it, once activated — it was about 18 hours for me, and you can use it multiple times that day if for some reason you get the urge for a two-a-day. You just tap to view the pass and show it to the gym representative when you walk in.

There's a Zeamo customer support number on the pass in case you run into any trouble, but it was fine for me. I activated my pass right outside the door and showed it to the gym employee without any issues, and I was on my way to start a workout like any other gym member.

Is Zeamo Easy to Use?

Frankly, this app was easier to use than my normal gym membership, which involves punching in my phone number and scanning my fingerprint. It was so simple to find a gym, get the pass, and activate it that there's really no reason why you shouldn't just download the app and peruse your options, especially because you don't have to pay until you choose a gym.

That being said, Zeamo's partner gyms are somewhat limited for now. In San Francisco, where I used it, there was only one option near me, although to be fair, it was very convenient — just a few blocks down from my office. And that seems to vary widely by city; New York City, for example, has dozens of options. In general, it looks like it's most convenient to use within the US, where gyms are available in every region and in 36 major metropolitan areas, like Chicago, Boston, Atlanta, and Los Angeles. Worldwide, the brand has options in Canada, Australia, the UK, Italy, and Germany. Paul O'Reilly-Hyland, founder and CEO of Zeamo, told POPSUGAR that the app is continuing to expand their gym partnerships and is looking to cover as many large urban areas across the US and overseas as possible. My experience was easy and pain-free, which is pretty crucial when you're stressed, traveling, and short on time. If you're trying to keep up with workouts on the road and want a little more than what a hotel or small-space bodyweight workout can offer, this cheap and flexible app is a great way to start.
