Here's How Your Favorite Peloton Instructors Get Dressed For Class — and For the Real World

I live for the moments my two favorite hobbies intersect: fitness and fashion. Usually, this happens when I least expect it — like when I'm on the treadmill sweating through one of Peloton instructor Jess Sims's Saturday 60 bootcamps, grinning from ear to ear (seriously, no fitness instructor has ever made me smile so wide), and I realize, "Hey, I really dig her outfit!" That got me thinking: how do the Peloton instructors — all of whom are basically celebrities in their own right with close to 100,000 Instagram followers — get dressed? Do they work with a Peloton stylist who advises them as to which sports bra best complements their metallic leggings? Rebecca Kennedy has so many metallic leggings! OMG, where does she keep them all? All of these thoughts rushed through my head as I sprinted my way toward the floor portion of the workout. (Yes, Jess, I took my butt with me! If you know, you know.)

"I love cropping tanks, cutting sleeves off tees, making capris into bike shorts, and layering sports bras."

I wanted desperately to ask these questions of the Peloton trainers, since they often get stoked about their looks, dressing up for themed rides and runs just to add a little more spunk to an already funkified workout. Even their beauty looks can be eccentric, with rainbow eyeshadow and glitter. Mostly, I just love how confident they all appear as they exercise in front of the world. Sure, it may be dark in the studio, but the camera lights amplify the trainers and their personalities, and they carry themselves with so much poise. A lot of that comes from what they're wearing and the fact that they feel so comfortable in their outfits.

I got the chance to talk to Robin Arzón, Ally Love, Olivia Amato, Jess Sims, Rebecca Kennedy, and my own personal running hero, Becs Gentry, who all confirmed that they have free rein when it comes to their wardrobes. "We always have to wear at least one Peloton-branded article of clothing, but they encourage us to be authentic to ourselves and do as we want. I love cropping tanks, cutting sleeves off tees, making capris into bike shorts, and layering sports bras," Sims told me about her personal style. But all six women got even more personal than that (it's cool, we sweat together!) and dished on their all-time favorite fashion moments, along with more details about their personal style. And I know you won't be mad that I asked them to name their favorite training shoes, too. What, you thought I'd leave you hanging?

POPSUGAR: What's a stylish article of clothing that's surprisingly easy to work out in?
Robin Arzón: Bandanas and gold rings. Bandanas are functional and multi-use accessories. If I'm wearing one for a workout, you might see it in my hair, on my wrist, or around my neck. Gold rings are always part of my look, even while working out. They're like the exclamation point to my outfit.

PS: What's your favorite look that you've ever styled for Peloton?
RA: I loved the Jennifer Lopez ride look with Jess King — bold colors that popped on camera and really matched the whole vibe of the ride.

PS: What are your all-time favorite workout shoes?
RA: I swear by Adidas Ultraboosts. This has been my go-to workout and running shoe for years. It's a high-quality product that just works really well for me personally.

PS: Do you ever work with a personal stylist?
RA: OMG, no. I style myself, always! I think it's important that my looks are authentically me — especially for teaching my classes.

PS: How do you get dressed when you're preparing to teach a class?
Ally Love: Every time I get in front of the camera, I prepare to look my best! I'm about connecting the content to my visible appearance, so you know what you're getting just by looking at my outfit.

PS: What about when you're working out on your own time?
AL: Actually, I'm always dressing as a way to express myself. I think what you wear, how you feel, and who you are can be showcased through style. Style includes and is not limited to hair, nails, jewelry, and a mix of textures.

PS: Have a pair of favorite workout shoes?
AL: Adidas Ultraboost 20.

PS: Do you have any little style quirks?
AL: I'm totally into cycling with an anklet on.

PS: Do you take style inspo from other athletes?
AL: I don't take style tips from anyone, but love how Serena Williams dresses for her matches. Also, I love how many NBA players are styled walking into the arena and taking press interviews postgame, like LeBron James, Russell Westbrook, and Dwyane Wade.

PS: What are you wearing for brunch with friends?
AL: I love to dress up! I always transition from workout clothes into a look with a point of view that is clear. It makes me feel good. It's so deeply part of my essence.

PS: Do you have a favorite themed look that you wore for a Peloton workout?
Olivia Amato: Yes! I loved my look for my Kesha Artist Series ride. The colors were so good and the eye makeup was so fun!

PS: What's your general approach to dressing for class?
OA: I pick my outfits based on how I'm feeling that day and the vibe I want to give off. If I know it's an EDM theme or a tough workout, sometimes I'll wear brighter colors to lighten the mood or match the music. But if I'm teaching a rock class, my look will be a little darker and grittier. I would have to say that my favorite look on Peloton so far has been for my Guns N' Roses Artist Series ride. I styled a plain GNR tee into a halter top and put a red Peloton sports bra underneath. I paired it with metallic silver pants and a messy ponytail with braids to get the rock 'n' roll vibe I was going for.

PS: What's a stylish article of clothing that's surprisingly easy to work out in?
OA: Crop tops! You can buy them or make your own with a T-shirt! I love cutting up T-shirts in different ways to change the look or vibe. I also love a good choker necklace layered with a few more chains or necklaces. I find that as long as it isn't heavy or too long, it doesn't bother me when working out. I'll always add a colored bandana around my wrist, neck, or in my hair for a pop of color.

PS: Do you have favorite workout shoes?
OA: For running, I love the Nike ZoomX Vaporfly NEXT%.

PS: Does your IRL sense of style coincide with your workout style at all?
OA: I would say that my off-duty style varies, but my go-to is usually streetwear/athleisure. There's nothing better than throwing on a cool hoodie and biker shorts. I also love wearing basics and adding accessories like a bag, jacket, and cool shoes to make it pop. Some days I want to wear an Off-White hoodie with biker shorts and Yeezys, but other days I want to wear a dress with Doc Martens, and sometimes I'm just in a plain tee, jean shorts, and white sneakers. It really depends on my mood.

PS: What's your closet like?
OA: Shoes are my vice! All of them — sneakers, heels, boots — I change the shoes featured (above) to match my mood, or based on how I'm feeling.

PS: What's your favorite-ever on-camera look?
Jess Sims: Definitely what I wore for my Whitney Houston class! I got inspiration from her "How Will I Know" video where she's wearing a simple black dress with sparkles and matching arm sleeves. I found the same vibe, but with an activewear twist with a sports bra and biker shorts. Also, what I wore for my Black History Month Two For One Bootcamp (co-taught with Chase Tucker) is easily my favorite look of 2020. I wore a white sports bra and legging set with gold snakeskin and my hair in braids. Chase also wore white and gold and we both felt so powerful.

PS: Do you seek outfit inspiration anywhere?
JS: No, not really! I get inspiration from the Peloton apparel line. I see what's coming out and then think about fun ways to mix and match things! The number one thing for me is comfort, because if I'm not comfortable in what I'm wearing then I won't feel confident. The next thing I think about is what makes me feel my best: solid colors, high-neck sports bras, and little accents like a fun scrunchie, a headband, or socks!

Courtesy of Jess Sims

PS: What do you wear when you're working out on your own?
JS: The biggest difference is that I love dark, neutral colors: black, gray, green, and beige. I don't wear that as much on camera because brighter colors tend to pop more with the lighting.

PS: Any fun workout gear you've been reaching for lately?
JS: I am loving asymmetrical, one-shoulder sports bras. You'd think that they might not be as supportive, but they're actually great and surprisingly comfy — and they look great!

PS: How about sneakers? Can you pick a favorite pair?
JS: I am obsessed with these Mizuno training shoes for strength training. They feel incredible on my feet, almost like I am barefoot, which is super important to help strengthen the muscles in your foot and ankles and improve your balance. I also love the white color because they pop on camera.

PS: Everyone knows you look forward to brunch after your Saturday 60 bootcamp. What are you wearing when you head out?
JS: My go-to look is either a jumpsuit or a matching set, hoops, sunglasses, and sneakers. The look above is from last year, but it's very typical of what you might see me in. Overall, my style is very chill: simple with solid colors, and usually a tomboy vibe (unless I get really dolled up, which I love to do for special occasions!).

PS: What does the workout section of your closet look like?
JS: I literally just had to buy a whole new dresser to fit all of my workout clothes. So now I have two dressers and I'm contemplating a third! I also have a big locker at the Peloton studio that is filled with backup items in case the outfit I've chosen for the day doesn't work for whatever reason. I have a hard time getting rid of some stuff because I convince myself that there may be one upcoming class that a specific sports bra would be perfect for! To stay organized, I try to keep the Peloton stuff together for ease of picking out outfits, and I love color-coding things.

PS: What's your favorite Peloton look ever?
Rebecca Kennedy: My all-time favorite was for a dance cardio class. I had black patent leather Heroine sports leggings, a neon sports bra layer with a sparkly bra on top, a coral neon shirt around my waist, and side-parted hair with a dope braid that had all the colors woven into it. I also love every single metallic legging and top combo! Plus, I have these incredible Adam Selman leggings that look like an '80s high-waisted bodysuit with the entire leg (top of the hip bone to ankle) in sheer mesh. Those were the leggings that inspired my "ba-bow!" tagline! Like, "Helloooo, New York, here I am!"

PS: Do you like to work with any statement pieces or accessories?
RK: I've always been into styling my own wardrobe and am always drawn to bright, bold colors, interesting materials, and statement pieces. I love bodysuits, bandanas, and funky crew or high-knee socks! If I find something randomly, I'll use it as inspiration and build an outfit around it. For example, I may find a mesh shrug while shopping for concert looks and pair it with a sports bra and shorts for a class. Bonus style tip: crop a tank top short so it lands above the bottom of your sports bra line so you can see the color of the bra underneath — always easy and fun for more interesting looks.

PS: Do you wear different sneakers for running than you do for training?
RK: For running, the Adidas Ultraboost X have been amazing! For training, Nike's TR 9 training shoe.

PS: What are you wearing when you're working out by yourself?
RK: I tend to go a bit more neutral. Koral leggings and Heroine Sport are my two favorite brands that I wear regularly, because while they are neutrals in metallics or solids, they have a sleek look made of shiny material that's both comfortable and fun. I get more compliments and questions about those leggings than anything! I love a sleek monochromatic story of black, white, and gray. I don't tend to do a ton of this on camera, as it doesn't pop. Bright colors make it easier to see my form, especially in a dark studio.

PS: After you choose your outfit for a Peloton workout, what comes next?
RK: Hair! A ponytail is always easy, but I have long hair, so it can get very sweaty and fly around a lot. My signature "bulb braid" is one of my favorites . . . or space buns! I don't go too over the top with makeup. I wear just enough so you can see my features under the bright studio lights, but not so much that it will sweat all over my face throughout the duration of a workout. A pop of color on the lip is always a favorite, and when I can sneak in sparkles, I always do.

PS: Ever had any wardrobe malfunctions on camera?
RK: I have very thick hair and my mane has popped a few ponytail holders in her life. I was teaching a lower-body strength class recently and it popped in the first three minutes of class. I had to tie it up in a bun just using my hair (no tie) and keep it moving. As they say in show biz: "The show must go on!"

PS: What's your off-duty style like?
RK: Full bodysuits (Free People Movement and Koral are my go-tos) are my absolute favorite. I love rompers in hot weather (my all-time fave is my Lululemon mesh black one). I'll wear them with a jacket or shirt tied around my waist and AF1s or platform sneakers. A statement track pant and tight crop top is a close second, with funky socks and bold sneakers. I also love biker shorts paired with a crop top or dolman-sleeve sweatshirt to layer with platform Converse or running sneakers.

PS: What does your closet look like at home?
RK: I have to get creative. I live in a very small studio apartment, so I keep storage bins and roll up my leggings (color-coordinated) under my bed, folded in bins, and separated by Peloton-branded and non-branded. Tops/bodysuits are also in their own separate bins.

PS: What's your all-time favorite on-camera look?
Becs Gentry: I honestly can't pick one, as there are multiple times an outfit has come together and shined on camera. One of my most recent has to be a pair of bright orange tights and cute Wear It to Heart bra. I also loved my hero moment in all white, and what I wore for the above outdoor summer shoot: pink tights and a green bra. It is super important for me to get across my personality and mood through my clothing choices. I recently taught a Britney Spears Artist Series run, and dressed as Britney herself. It was divine and so much fun!

PS: Are you inspired by any other athletes when it comes to fashion and beauty?
BG: I look to athletes like Colleen Quigley for hair and my colleagues provide me with constant makeup styling advice. When it comes to clothing, I let my own style flow with items I feel comfortable teaching and training in, in combination with what I get complimented on.

PS: What do you wear when you work out alone?
BG: I am a lot more subdued. I tend to wear older kits, as I save all the new items for on camera. I also keep my more tech-savvy items for my own training. The brands remain the same — predominantly Nike with Peloton touches!

Courtesy of Becs Gentry

PS: Have you ever had any hilarious wardrobe malfunctions or regrets at Peloton?
BG: The closest I have come to a wardrobe hiccup would be running in my Halloween costume. I nearly cooked — it was too hot!

PS: What shoes are you running in?
BG: Nike Pegasus Turbo 2, without a doubt!

Courtesy of Becs Gentry

PS: How would you describe your everyday personal style?
BG: I generally have something Nike, or casual sports lifestyle items, such as Common Projects shoes. My general style is simple — I wear a lot of bright colors on camera, so I tend to lean towards more muted colors on my own time. I love flowing cuts, again, probably because I am in the tightest cuts on camera.

PS: Do you have any stylish items that cross over from the fitness realm to everyday looks?
BG: I would say my Nike trail shoes. They have a supertechnical design for off-road running, but they still look chic with a sundress.
