Ever since starting my knee tendinitis recovery journey, walking has been a go-to workout for me, so I was incredibly excited to try out Equinox's new Fully Vested rucking-inspired treadmill class with instructor and coach Or Artzi. Because the 45-minute session requires members to slip on the newly-released Precision Vest, designed by Precision Run founder David Siik as the first of its kind customizable vest up to 30 pounds, I wanted to wear something light and formfitting with full coverage.
"Because the vest sits on your torso and isn't sweat-absorbing, it's best to wear gear that keeps you cool — and always wipe down the vest after class," Artzi says. "I personally recommend avoiding very loose or oversize tops — though this comes down to individual preference. Since the vest adds an extra layer, oversize shirts can sometimes feel too warm and bulky. Plus, a fun fact: the vest was designed to highlight your natural shape and strength, and Equinox takes pride in both the performance and the aesthetic it offers."
Since I was new to the weighted vest workout, we started by packing in five percent of my body weight, then gradually adjusted the Kilogear 2.5lb Kettlebell ($20) weights to my liking. "Most people in the Fully Vested class choose between five to 15 percent of their body weight," Artzi explains.
I will admit, the vest added a super-sleek, badass feel to my chosen Splits59 Airweight co-ords, which are crafted from thin, moisture-wicking fabric with quick-dry technology that I could definitely feel working as I started to drip. Not only did I enjoy the Pirate Red colorway of the set, I was glad I opted for a bodysuit silhouette so I didn't have to deal with a top riding up, or any friction underneath the vest as I pumped my arms and made my way up hills (rather briskly!).
Before class, Artzi also offered advice about footwear: "Skip the high-cushion running shoes — opt for walking-specific or cross-training sneakers for better stability." My Nike Free Metcon 6 were perfect for this, accenting the black vest and stripes on my leggings for a stylish touch.
