Selena Gomez is back from her 2016 break from the spotlight, and while we wait for the star to come out with new music — we know it's coming — we're reminiscing about the amazing show that was her Revival tour, from her sparkly outfits to her powerful vocals to her connection to her fans, and, of course, her bouncy, shampoo-commercial-worthy hair.
We caught up with Selena's longtime hairstylist and Pantene partner Marissa Marino to chat about the secrets behind the "Kill Em With Kindness" singer's bouncy waves and thick, jealousy-inducing hair. 1 Her Routine Starts in the Shower
"Selena started adding moisture to her hair with Pantene Pro-V Daily Moisture Renewal Shampoo and Conditioner ($9 each). She had to add a lot of hydrating ingredients into her hair because all that hot styling we did for the show could be damaging," Marissa said.
The singer also applied a deep conditioner twice a week, though Marissa suggests you do it only once if your hair isn't damaged. "The Pantene Pro-V 3 Minute Miracle Moisture Renewal Deep Conditioner ($6) is good because we didn't always have a lot of time to get Selena ready," she added.
2 Her Onstage Dancing Put Her Waves to the Test
If you saw Selena live during her Revival tour, you know her hair played a big role on her stage dance moves and performance. "Yes, Selena loves to flip her hair," Marissa said, laughing. "It was the Pantene Airspray Light Hold Hairspray ($7) that kept the waves in place — she had so much of it in her hair. I sprayed it before I curled it, and then after I curled it, and while we were walking to stage, and then before she got on stage, and then every time she came back to change. It's so light, which is great because her curls were supposed to be able to move, and she wanted to have fun with her hairstyle — that was the whole point."
3 She Doesn't Wash Her Hair Every Day
You would think that with all that hair spray Selena would need to shampoo every night after the show, but Marissa preferred to have the singer wash her hair every other day. "We usually had a show and then a day off, so on the days off, she left it and on show days, she washed it and styled it. She is blessed with some really good hair," she said, adding that it was all about protecting Selena's hair from extra damage.
4 Her Constant Hair Changes Kept Everything Fun
Marissa didn't mind that Selena dyed her hair lighter and decided to go for bangs in the middle of the tour. "It was actually fun for me," she said.
"Her bangs did better when we let them air-dry, which I know sounds crazy. But with her wave pattern, they somehow lay better when we don't touch them. Hair is a day-by-day path — sometimes they very easily went to the side, sometimes they would split down the middle, and, then, some days, they wanted to be full-blown bangs. So we just kind of worked off of where they wanted to be that day," Marissa said.
5 Selena Loved Switching It Up in the Middle of the Show
Selena's signature waves kicked off the Revival show, but halfway through, a thick braid made an appearance for a slowed-down portion of the concert. "Obviously the big, wavy, voluminous hair is so beautiful and fun and it looks amazing on stage, but the braid, I think for both of us, was a nice little switch-up," Marissa said. "During that part of the show, it was a nice ballad section, so it just got it out of her face and made it a little bit special. For me, it was just fun to create new looks. Under all that adrenaline, you have like 60 seconds, and it's just really fun."
