Touchy subjects like politics and religion should be off the table on a first date because of this very reason. If you're both getting fired up, remind yourselves that you're there to have fun. Save the controversial stuff for date number two or three — if you get there. And if you find yourselves arguing over little things, take that as a sign that maybe you're not so compatible.

Keeping phones on the table during a date is rude enough, but by replying to texts, you're only showing that you'd rather be somewhere else. Politely ask them to put their phone away during your time together. If they can't respect that, we wouldn't blame you for leaving.
