These Are the Key Game of Thrones Season 7 Filming Locations

The vast world of Game of Thrones is still expanding in season seven. Now that Daenerys is finally back in Westeros, Dragonstone is a major location, but it's far from the only new locale featured this year. While Daenerys and her small council plot to take the Iron Throne from Cersei, the show is busy taking fans to long-talked about (but little seen) places like Oldtown, Highgarden, and Casterly Rock. As always, Northern Ireland remains a center for the show's production, but fans planning a themed vacation should be prepared to visit stunning real-world locations all across Europe to get the full Westeros experience. Read on to discover the wide array of locations used to make Game of Thrones season seven come to life.

Dragonstone = The Basque Country, Spain

Daenerys Stormborn's homecoming needs a dramatic locale, and the Basque Country of Spain is full of cinematic beaches and that astounding walkway leading up to Dragonstone. While the castle itself is CGI, the island of Gaztelugatxe is home to the impressive staircase Daenerys (and later Jon Snow) ascends to reach her birthplace. The beach where she kneels down to touch the sand in the season seven premiere is another Spanish location, Itzurun Beach. Meanwhile, the cliffs where Melisandre and Varys have their unsettling chat in "The Queen's Justice" appear to be in the cove of Muriola in Barrika.

King's Landing = Dubrovnik, Croatia, and Cáceres, Spain

Queen Cersei's stronghold has two real-life counterparts this season. While most of the King's Landing scenes continue to be filmed in Dubrovnik, a few scenes have also been filmed in Cáceres this season — most notably Euron's victorious return to the city with Ellaria Sand, her daughter, and Yara.

Highgarden = Castillo de Almodóvar, Andalusia, Spain

Game of Thrones fans should know that the real life Highgarden is every bit as impressive as the one they saw on screen. The ancient castle of Almodóvar strikes an imposing figure, making it the perfect stand-in for the seat of the proud House Tyrell.

Casterly Rock = Trujillo, Cáceres, Spain

Cáceres isn't just home to parts of King's Landing. The Spanish destination also plays a starring role in the Unsullied's attack on Casterly Rock. The Lannisters' ancestral home is actually the beautiful Trujillo Castle.

Winterfell = Northern Ireland

Castle Ward, Strangford Castle, and the surrounding area of County Down collectively make up Winterfell and its grounds. If you want to visit the castle Jon Snow reclaims for his family in season six, there are plenty of official tours offered by the good people of Northern Ireland. The country is a Game of Thrones hotspot, where the official production studio is located.

The Wall = Magheramorne Quarry, Northern Ireland

There hasn't been much action at the Wall in season seven (not yet, anyway), but Magheramorne Quarry remains the prime filming location for Castle Black scenes. Meanwhile, Iceland stands in for the harsh wintry scenes that take place beyond the Wall.

Oldtown = Cáceres, Spain

While Sam has spent most of his time inside in season seven, Game of Thrones fansite Watchers on the Wall reported that several Oldtown scenes were filmed in the popular locale of Cáceres. That can only mean one thing: there's more Sam goodness to come this season.
