Jessica Jones: Everything You Need to Remember About Season 1

If you're missing some snarky, kickass heroines in your life, fear not because Jessica Jones has returned to Netflix with an action-packed second season. That said, it's probably been a while since you've kept an eye on your favorite superhuman sleuth with a biting wit. Netflix released the first season of Jessica Jones in November 2015, after all.

Going through each major character, we present to you a refresher course on everything that happened in season one, as well as other Jessica Jones character involvements in The Defenders. And trust us, things went down — we certainly can't forget about Kilgrave's nefarious plots and Jeri Hogarth's morbid near-death experience.

Jessica Jones

You'll remember Jessica Jones as the sardonic private investigator with superhuman strength and a troubled past. In season one, Jessica takes on the case of a missing girl named Hope Schlottman. Her client turns out to be mind-controlled by Kilgrave, the psychic villain who had sexually and mentally abused Jessica for six months. Kilgrave, throughout the season, stalks and hunts down Jessica, using her friends and clients as bait.

Jessica eventually defeats Kilgrave by snapping his neck after an epic cat-and-mouse showdown at the Ferry Hudson Terminal. She's later taken to jail and District Attorney Samantha Reyes accuses her of killing Kilgrave in cold blood. Jeri Hogarth negotiates a deal with DA, claiming that Kilgrave had forced Jessica to kill him. Jessica returns to her apartment, now a free woman with many interested in becoming her clients.

We see Jessica again in the ensemble cast of The Defenders, in which she works alongside Danny Rand, Matt Murdock, and Luke Cage to dismantle the Hand, a supervillain secret organization. At the beginning of the ensemble series, the superheroine pauses her work at Alias Investigations and resorts to drinking in order to grapple with her encounter with Kilgrave. She soon returns to work after a run-in with Matt Murdock, aka Daredevil.

Kilgrave

After his run on Doctor Who, David Tennant steps into the shoes of one of the most nefarious Marvel villains ever, Kilgrave, or The Purple Man. Kilgrave is the abusive mind controller who keeps Jessica Jones captive for six months and orders her to kill Reva Connors, Luke Cage's wife. In season 1, he controls and kills countless people to get to Jessica, who reluctantly agrees to meet with him in her childhood home. We learn that his parents had experimented on him when he was younger to cure a neurodegenerative disease. We also find out that those experiments led to Kilgrave's mind powers.

Jessica eventually holds Kilgrave hostage inside a soundproof room but he manages to escape. A few casualties later, Jessica, with Trish's backup, confronts Kilgrave at the Ferry Hudson Terminal. He orders a group of innocent people to kill each other, knowing that Jessica would try to stop them. As Jessica walks towards him, he yells for everyone to stop. Jessica stops. For a few hot seconds, Kilgrave believes that he has Jessica under his control but she snaps his neck and kills him immediately.

With that said, Jessica did think a speeding bus had killed Kilgrave at the beginning of the first season. (Spoiler alert: it didn't.) Will Kilgrave return in the flesh in season 2? From what we know, Tennant will return as Kilgrave, but he will likely be an apparition or imagined presence as Jessica grapples with her trauma.

Malcolm Ducasse

Malcolm Ducasse

Malcolm is Jessica's kind, loyal neighbor, who occasionally grabs snacks from her apartment. Under Kilgrave's manipulation, he develops a drug addiction and starts spying on Jessica. Kilgrave's plan doesn't last for very long since Jessica helps her neighbor get clean. Malcolm, in turn, helps her with various housekeeping tasks in her business, like, you know, dumping a body.

We see Malcolm again in The Defenders. He helps Jessica find John Raymond, who later takes Malcolm as a hostage. By the end of The Defenders, Malcolm helps Jessica relaunch Alias Investigations. Growing up in a family committed to community service, he is devoted to helping others and seeks to right the wrongs he committed under Kilgrave's control.

Jeri Hogarth
Netflix

Jeri Hogarth

A partner at the law firm Hogarth, Chao & Benowitz (yup, the same one that Foggy from Daredevil works for), Jeri is a stern and whip-smart lawyer who assigns Jessica freelance P.I. cases, though she'd rather have Jessica permanently on her team. In season 1, she undergoes a messy divorce case with her wife Dr. Wendy Ross, who finds out about the lawyer's affair with her secretary. Jessica informs Jeri that her client had been mind-controlled by Kilgrave, to which Jeri is skeptical.

Later on, Jeri becomes Kilgrave's slave. Instead of driving to a hospital, she drives to her ex's house so that he can force Wendy into signing divorce papers. It turns out to be a not-so-great idea that ends in Kilgrave telling Jeri's ex to bring her "death by a thousand cuts." Thankfully, Jeri's secretary-slash-paramour arrives in the nick of time, bashing in Wendy's head. When things are finished with Kilgrave, Jeri negotiates a deal with the DA so that Jessica won't be punished for killing Kilgrave.

Trish Walker
Netflix

Trish Walker

A former child star, Trish is Jessica's best friend and the host of Trish Talk. She knows about Jessica's powers and history since her mom adopted Jessica when they were teenagers. Throughout season 1, she aids Jessica with tracking down Kilgrave. Police officer Will Simpson, a member of the paramilitary group called the IGH, wins her affection momentarily. But when Will rages out on Jessica, Trish knocks him out after taking his strength-enhancing pills. Trish later decoys as Jessica to distract Kilgrave during season one's final showdown. While Trish is super skilled in martial arts and self-defense, we've yet to see her turn into her comic book alter ego Hellcat.

She reappears in The Defenders, in which she tries to convince her best friend to get back in the crime-fighting business as Jessica stops her car from getting towed. Later, Trish and Malcolm find themselves among those under Misty Knight's protection during the fight against the Hand.
