20 Times Once Upon a Time Didn't Have a Happy Ending

When Dr. Whale manages to bring Daniel back from the dead, not everything is what it seems. After trying to strangle Regina, he begs her to let him die.

After Tamara shoots Neal, she opens a portal to trap them. As Emma holds on for dear life, the two confess their true feelings for each other, right before Neal lets go.

Just before Mulan tells Aurora that she loves her, she is heartbroken to learn that Aurora and Prince Philip are expecting a baby. She tearfully walks away from her love, holding in her feelings forever.

After Peter Pan's new curse approaches, Emma and Henry are forced to leave their family behind. As if that wasn't bad enough, they also lose all their memories from their time in Storybrooke.

In the Enchanted Forest, the Charmings devise a plan to take everyone back to Storybrooke. Only problem is that Snow White is forced to crush the heart of the thing she loves most — Prince Charming.

Emma really has bad luck with guys. When Emma uses her magic to split Neal from Mr. Gold, he ends up dying in the process.

As Peter Pan threatens the well-being of everyone in Storybrooke, Rumple has a rare occurrence of bravery when he uses the dagger to kill himself and his father.

Once Elsa reveals the truth about her mother, Gerda, the Snow Queen makes a heroic decision to sacrifice herself for the town and, in doing so, finally be reunited with her sisters.

When Belle learns that Rumple has being lying to her, she uses the dagger to send him across the town line, so that he can never return to Storybrooke.

With Regina's life in danger, Emma sacrifices herself to become the Dark One, but not before confessing her love to Captain Hook.

After being struck by Excalibur, Hook finds himself on the brink of death. Even though he tells Emma to let him go, she makes the drastic decision to create a new Dark One by linking his soul to the sword.

After a lot of back and forth between the two Dark Ones, Hook decides to be a better man by sacrificing himself and eliminating the darkness.

Just moments after learning they have true love, the star-crossed lovers are forced to say one final goodbye when they realize Hades has jinxed their plan to bring Hook back to Storybrooke.

In what might be one of the saddest deaths on the show, Regina says goodbye to yet another person she loves, when Hades kills Robin Hood with the Olympian crystal that was actually meant for her.

Rumple and Belle really do have an epic romance. After spending their lives together, Belle grows old and passes away in their home that they built together. Even though Rumple is heartbroken to see her go, she assures him that they will eventually find their way back to each other like they've done many times before.
