Is Someone Going to Drown on Big Little Lies? These 5 Clues Have Me Convinced

Things are getting real for the Monterey Five in season two of HBO's Big Little Lies. Secrets are being exposed and relationships are being fractured — and, thanks to new sh*t-stirrers like Perry's mom, Mary Louise Wright (Meryl Streep) and Bonnie's mom, Elizabeth Howard (Crystal Fox), it only gets worse.

The second episode, "Tell-Tale Hearts," skillfully shows how each of the women are drowning, metaphorically, in their own lives. Renata's husband, Gordon, may be heading to prison after losing all of their money; Jane is forced to explain assault to Ziggy after he finds out who his father is; Celeste becomes Mary Louise's number one suspect after revealing Perry's longtime abuse; Madeline's marriage to Ed is basically over after he finds out about her affair with Joseph the theater director; and Bonnie is quite obviously dealing with the effects of post-traumatic stress disorder after pushing Perry down those stairs.

But there are also a handful of references to an actual drowning in "Tell-Tale Hearts," as well as in the subsequent BLL episodes. Unfortunately, I have no choice but to believe that someone is going to end up underwater, literally — and most of the signs are pointing to Bonnie. Keep reading for the possible clues.

Bonnie's Mom Has a Vision That "Someone's Drowning"

In "Tell-Tale Hearts," Bonnie's mom Elizabeth comes to Monterey in an attempt to help Nathan figure out how to connect with his wife (who is very obviously dealing with PTSD after causing Perry's death). After reading the hell out of Nathan, Bonnie, and her husband Martin while having dinner at a restaurant, Elizabeth later creeps into Bonnie and Nathan's bedroom, arranges a bone, feather, and crystal on the dresser, and appears to pray over her daughter's sleeping body.

Bonnie confronts her mother about the talismans; Elizabeth then reveals that she's "been having visions lately" and knows Bonnie's been having them, too. "They are strong . . . somebody's drowning," she says. "I see lots of water, and somebody's drowning. I see you drowning right now, in a way." Between Elizabeth's shrewdness and Mary Louise's persistence, nothing is getting past these moms.

Madeline Once Saved Celeste's Son From Drowning

Mary Louise is clearly no fan of Celeste's BFF, Madeline. In an effort to convince her that Madeline actually has some redeeming qualities, Celeste tells her mother-in-law that Madeline "once saved Max from drowning." It's a comment that happens earlier in "Tell-Tale Hearts" — way before we find out about Bonnie's mom's vision — making it easy to miss, but still a poignant reference.

Bonnie Walks Into the Ocean With Her Clothes On

In episode three, "The End of the World," a visibly distressed Bonnie is seen walking into the ocean while fully clothed. It's hard to read too much into such a short clip, but it does seem like a possible clue: is Bonnie planning to drown herself?

04

Elizabeth Pushes Bonnie's Daughter, Skye, Underwater in a Swimming Pool

The clip continues with Elizabeth holding on to a young Bonnie, teaching her how to swim and plunging her underwater in a public swimming pool (there's a lifeguard on duty, thank god). Almost simultaneously, we see Bonnie fully submerged in the ocean, which further hints at a possible drowning attempt.

05

Bonnie Literally Floating Face-Down in a Body of Water

In what might be the most glaring clue, there's a blurry, split-second frame of Bonnie floating face-down in the water during episode four, "She Knows." It's part of another vision Elizabeth has in her hospital bed after suffering a stroke. The moment Bonnie touches her mother's hand, she's inundated with flashes of her drowning. It's not looking good for my girl.

So, Who Is Most Likely to Drown on Big Little Lies?

So, Who Is Most Likely to Drown on Big Little Lies?

It may still be too soon to tell, but most of the foreshadowing points to Bonnie being the one who drowns. It's clear that she's holding onto some secrets about her life before moving to Monterey, and it doesn't help that her own mother is the one who has the visions of her drowning body. Bonnie could be so crushed by the weight of causing Perry's death that she ultimately takes her own life — or, perhaps Mary Louise (currently on the war path to find out what really happened to her son) finds out that Bonnie is his killer, and pushes her into a swimming pool?

There's also the possibility that nobody drowns in the present day, and instead we find out that someone (along with Max Wright) suffered a near-drowning incident in the past. And with the new revelation that Perry's twin brother Raymond died in "an accident" at 5 years old, there's also a chance that the abusive husband and father may have taken his brother's life — perhaps by drowning him.
