The New Game of Thrones Trailer Has Sparked So Many Wild Theories

We are less than a month out from the penultimate season of Game of Thrones, and there's no way we're prepared to handle the madness ahead. This week, HBO released a second full trailer for the seventh season, and it's positively jam-packed with incendiary new revelations. A possible sneak attack on the Lannisters! A battle against the undead army of the North! A flaming sword! Bran's wheelchair! We thought it best to unpack the most significant parts of the new trailer, so buckle up and dive in with us. Season seven will be here before you know it.

Sansa's Possible Rise to Power
HBO

Sansa's Possible Rise to Power

"Don't fight in the north or the south. Fight every battle, everywhere, always. In your mind." These are Littlefinger's words, presumably to Sansa, at the beginning of trailer. Not only does it seem like an insightful peek into Littlefinger's personal strategy but it shows how he's whispering in Sansa's ear. He might be giving her the bigger picture and the secret to taking over the Seven Kingdoms.

Bran's Long-Awaited Return
HBO

Bran's Long-Awaited Return

Look, Bran has finally made it to the Wall! This means a ton of things. He's going to bring his newfound powers into the show's final big battles. He's potentially going to reunite with the rest of the Starks. And, well, maybe he's going to tell Jon about his true parentage. This is going to be huge.

Jon Snow's White Walker Confrontation
HBO

Jon Snow's White Walker Confrontation

Here we can see one of the most recognizable members of the White Walker army . . . and he appears to be fighting Jon Snow. I mean, it's hard to tell for sure, but you can just barely catch a glimpse of a man bun on top of all the armor and furs. Plus, Jon Snow has consistently been on the front lines when it comes to battling enemies. We imagine he would be at the helm of the White Walker war.

A Major White Walker Battle?
HBO

A Major White Walker Battle?

This isn't just about a one-on-one confrontation. In another shot, Jon stands on an elevated platform of sorts while a fight ensues beneath him. While there's no concrete proof that there are White Walkers in this mix, we can't imagine who else would be fighting. After all, the Wildlings have joined forces with the armies of the North. Could this be the beginning of the end?!

05
Bran's New Wheels
HBO

Bran's New Wheels

Bran has finally upgraded his sled to a wheelchair. We're sure Meera is quite relieved. What's interesting here is the person he's with. It's clear he's still honing his greensight here. Is there a possibility that this person is the previous Three-Eyed Raven? It's true, the Night King has killed him, but we know Bran's powers work in mysterious ways. Could this be a flashback? Could Bran somehow commune with the Three-Eyed Raven in his altered state? We'll have to wait and see.

06
Daenerys's Explosive Arrival and Jon Snow's Powerful Speech
HBO

Daenerys's Explosive Arrival and Jon Snow's Powerful Speech

Jon Snow gives a pretty intense speech about halfway through the trailer: "For centuries, our families fought together against their common enemy. Despite their differences, together. We need to do the same if we're going to survive, because the enemy is real. It's always been real."

There are so many possibilities here. Could he simply be talking to all the houses of the North in an attempt to rally them against the White Walkers? We're pretty sure Jon and Daenerys will meet this season, so there's always a chance he could be saying this to Dany too. There's even a chance he's saying it to everyone: the Targaryens, the Lannisters, the Greyjoys, everyone. Maybe he means the only way to defeat the real evil — the White Walkers — is to unite all Seven Kingdoms as one.

07
Beric Dondarrion and His Sword
HBO

Beric Dondarrion and His Sword

When we last see Beric Dondarrion, he's trying to convince the Hound to join the fight against the White Walkers. And here's the thing: it looks like he succeeds. We know Beric is fighting alongside Jon Snow. You can see his flaming sword in the wide shot we included above.

That said, is there a greater role for Beric to play? If you know the prophecy of Azor Ahai, then you're aware of the mythical sword called the Lightbringer. And, well, a flaming sword imbued with magic seems like just the thing you'd call the "Lightbringer." Beric himself couldn't possibly be Azor Ahai reborn. After all, he's one of the worst fighters in Westeros and has died (and been resurrected by Thoros of Myr) six times. The most popular theory is that Jon Snow is Azor Ahai, and that's what makes Beric's new position pretty interesting. Maybe his sword will fall into Jon Snow's hands, and Jon Snow will fulfill the prophecy.

08
A Sneak Attack By Grey Worm
HBO

A Sneak Attack By Grey Worm

Meanwhile, all the way down in Casterly Rock, it seems that Grey Worm is leading an ambush on Lannister territory. As a reminder, Tyrion was in charge of overseeing the sewer system when he was on duty. Could he be the one behind this attack? In a later shot, we see a handful of the Unsullied letting more of their own men in through some gates. This could be some Trojan War kind of sneakiness.

09
An Endnote From Sansa
HBO

An Endnote From Sansa

"When the snows falls and the white winds blow," Sansa says, "the lone wolf dies, but the pack survives." There have been so many lone wolves throughout the series. The most obvious guess is Jon Snow, but is that too obvious? Would they really kill Jon Snow again? Some more adventurous guesses include Cersei (who, at this point, is ruling King's Landing by herself), Daenerys (who has always been a solitary ruler), or even Arya Stark (who has been on her own for quite a few seasons now). But would any of them make sense? Sansa seems to be implying that one person might sacrifice themselves to save everyone else. We can only guess.
