12 Moments That Had You Saying "WTF?" This Year

There was quite a lot to be confused about in 2014, from fashion trends that had us scratching our heads — like Pharrell's giant hat and pretty much everything Miley Cyrus wore — to some pretty perplexing award show speeches and baffling celebrity breakup rumors; remember when we thought Beyoncé and Jay Z were getting a divorce? Keep reading for 12 of the most confusing pop culture moments that occurred this year, and make sure you're up to speed on all the most popular terms and phrases from 2014.

Jay Z and Beyoncé's Faux Divorce

Persistent rumors of a split between Beyoncé and Jay Z gained steam earlier this year, and over the Summer, things reached a fever pitch. What seemingly started with an unfortunate family fight in an elevator quickly progressed into reports of separate hotels, traveling lawyers, and a possible divorce — all while photos of the couple during their On the Run tour showed them looking sweet and loving on stage (and don't even get us started on that heartfelt family moment at the MTV VMAs). We were so confused and fearful of a split between Beyoncé and Jay Z this year that we put together a timeline of all the relationship drama, though it became clear in September that there was no actual end in sight. The questions still remain, though: was there ever trouble in paradise, or was it all just a cruel, cruel hoax? We may never know.

When John Travolta Called Idina Menzel "Adele Dazeem"

In case you were under a rock and missed this iconic moment, John Travolta introduced Idina Menzel's "Let It Go" performance during the Oscars in March, and whether it was his nerves or a bit of a stumble, he completely struggled to pronounce her name, introducing "the wickedly talented, one and only . . . Adele Dazeem." Twitter quickly took note of the actor's slipup, and not only did John's name become the top Twitter trend within minutes, but "Adele Dazeem" got her own Twitter account. John addressed the blunder days later, saying, "I've been beating myself up all day. Then I thought . . . What would Idina Menzel say? She'd say, 'Let it go, let it go!'"

Matthew McConaughey's Award Season Speeches

Matthew McConaughey swept award season this year, picking up the coveted best actor trophies at every single ceremony. His acceptance speeches got crazier and crazier along the way and included everything from signature phrases like "Alright, alright, alright" and "just keep livin'" to his favorite chest-pounding move from The Wolf of Wall Street. Matthew's most random story came during his SAGs speech, when he went off on a tangent about Neptune. Remember this nugget? "It feels like they could put a blindfold on you and put you on a spaceship and take you to Neptune and you could hop off on the planet and they better have the sprockets rolling and when you get off that spaceship because you are going to behave as your man. That is a glorious feeling!" Congratulations on your many awards, Matthew, but we will just never understand most of what you're saying when you accept them — and we're kind of OK with it.

When It Was Announced That Hello Kitty Isn't Even a Freaking Kitty

The world was rocked on Aug. 27 when it was revealed that, despite having a feline face, paws, and whiskers, Hello Kitty is not a cat but a young girl. Professor Christine R. Yano, author of Pink Globalization: Hello Kitty's Trek Across the Pacific, uncovered the truth when Sanrio told her, "Hello Kitty is not a cat. She's a cartoon character. She is a little girl. She is a friend. But she is not a cat. She's never depicted on all fours. She walks and sits like a two-legged creature." Needless to say, the Internet reactions were a mix of shock, anger, and general perplexity — and we may never fully recover.

Pharrell Williams's Giant Hat

We were first introduced to Pharrell's enormous hat at the Grammy Awards in January, and the head-scratching began almost immediately. The Internet compared him to everything from Dudley Do-Right and Smokey the Bear to Woody from Toy Story and even the Arby's logo. Pharrell explained the legacy of his giant headwear, saying, "It's a Vivienne Westwood Buffalo hat from when she was with Malcolm McLaren," adding, "It's not vintage — I would've been really stylin' if I had one from the '80s." Since the Grammys, Pharrell has popped up wearing his now-infamous hat in shades of tan, gray, and green — and even though we're all still pretty baffled by it, it's definitely an accessory that we'll never forget.

Miley Cyrus's Kooky Art Collection

Even though we first heard about Miley Cyrus's art in September, we're still not entirely sure what her concept is. The singer did an interview with V Magazine to talk about her Dirty Hippie collection, saying that she didn't want to just be some "pop pop dumb dumb." From there, she explained, "I just sit around and smoke weed anyway, so I might as well sit around, smoke weed, and do something. And this is me doing something. I love it. I mean, I'm up until seven in the morning doing this stuff all the time. It was much weirder when I started doing it while I was sober." Her pieces include everything from joints to vibrators to a bedazzled hamster toy and were featured in a Manhattan exhibition, as well as in designer Jeremy Scott's New York Fashion Week runway show. To quote Miley, "They say money can't buy happiness, and it's totally true. Money can buy you a bunch of sh*t to glue to a bunch of other sh*t that will make you happy, but besides that, there's no more happiness." So, that's that.

Sofia Vergara's Slightly Sexist Emmys Stunt

One of the most memorable moments of the 2014 Emmys came when Modern Family star Sofia Vergara introduced Bruce Rosenblum, president of the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences. In addition to the spiel he normally gives on stage about who the Academy is and what it does, Bruce asked Sofia to step onto a rotating platform while he spoke. During his entire speech, she stood there and spun around while smiling for the audience and playing up her famous curves. The president ended by saying, "What truly matters is that we never forget that our success is based on always giving the viewer something compelling to watch." Before stepping off the platform, Sofia quipped, "Enough! That's why I stopped doing the car shows!" Backlash quickly ensued, with many viewers calling the segment "offensive" and "sexist." Sofia hit back at her critics the following day, saying, "I think it's absolutely the opposite. It means that somebody can be hot and also be funny and make fun of herself. I think it's ridiculous that somebody started this — I know who she was — who has no sense of humor and should lighten up a little bit."

While we were mostly baffled as to why anybody thought that onstage bit was a good idea to begin with, confusion then turned to just who Sofia was accusing of starting a rumor and having "no sense of humor." Was it one of her costars? A fellow actress? Maybe it was Adele Dazeem — she's always stirring up trouble.

When Courtney Love Claimed to Find the Missing Malaysia Plane

Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 mysteriously went missing in March, and rocker Courtney Love was just one celebrity to share her condolences for the passengers and their distraught families. In addition to her heartfelt messages of concern, the Hole frontwoman went a few steps further, claiming to know where the aircraft was located. Courtney posted a satellite photo on Facebook of the ocean off the coast of Vietnam, which, aided by labels and arrows made in Microsoft Paint, seemed to reveal what could have been the missing plane and oil underwater. Along with the image, Courtney wrote, "I'm no expert but up close this does look like a plane and an oil slick," adding, "Prayers go out to the families [of passengers on] #MH370 and it's like a mile away Pulau Perak, where they 'last' tracked it 5°39'08.5"N 98°50'38.0"E but what do I know?" Sadly, nobody — least of all Courtney Love — has been able to recover the missing aircraft since the incident occurred.

Kylie Jenner's Growing Lips

The saga of the size of Kylie Jenner's lips was less of a confusing moment and more of a confusing phenomenon. The youngest of the Kardashian-Jenner clan sported multiple beauty looks this year, but the change that had people most mystified was her growing pout. Naturally, rumors spread that Kylie had gotten some sort of lip injections, and Kylie's comments were more dismissive than explanatory. "I feel like everyone has been talking about it for months, so I'm kind of sick of it," she said. "In my pictures, I pout them out a lot. I think big lips are awesome." She also admitted, "I love lip liner and overlining my lips." It was her big sister Kim Kardashian who spilled all the beans on Kylie's makeup tricks in an interview, saying, "Kylie draws her lip like this," while tracing her finger over her upper lip and adding, "She's so good at makeup. She only wears a lip liner and fills it in. She doesn't wear a lipstick or a gloss." Hopefully, the confusion over Kylie's mouth will cool down in 2015; maybe she'll finally give us a YouTube tutorial?

Kendall Jenner's Onstage Slipup

Out of all the weird things that happened at this year's Billboard Awards, Kendall Jenner's onstage slipup was probably at the top of list. Not only did she commit the cardinal sin of mixing up One Direction and 5 Seconds of Summer, but then she went into a fit of giggles before telling an entire audience of people (and at-home viewers) that she's illiterate. "I'm the worst reader," is not something you want to hear from a person who just recently released a book. It's cool, though: Kendall bounced back from the onstage flub and went on to have one of the best years ever.

When Macklemore "Robbed" Kendrick Lamar

Macklemore & Ryan Lewis beat out Kendrick Lamar for the best rap album award at the Grammys, and while we weren't surprised at the duo's big win, we were a bit bummed that Lamar didn't take home any of the awards he was up for (his debut album, Good Kid, M.A.A.D. City, was nominated seven times). It seemed like Macklemore may have felt the same way, as he texted Lamar after the ceremony to apologize, saying, "You got robbed. I wanted you to win. You should have. It's weird and it sucks that I robbed you."

The Seattle MC also shared a screenshot of the text on Instagram, leading us to be a little confused about the intent of his message, plus some other things. For instance, "It sucks that I robbed you?" Does Macklemore know how award shows work? Why share the text on Instagram? Do you just want everyone to know that you feel bad for winning? How do you live with having so many unread text messages? And who, pray tell, is the fake Kendrick?

Almost Everything Shia LaBeouf Did

Shia LaBeouf got a lot of negative, unwanted(?) attention this year because of the plagiarism scandals and paper-bag mask (plus the performance art exhibit and that whole Cabaret arrest) — all resulting in confusion and concern from fans. Since he explained the whole debacle in a sit-down interview with Jimmy Kimmel in October, it seems like the tide is starting to turn for him in the court of public opinion. Hopefully things will look up for Shia even more in 2015.
