The show makes us cry multiple times in the first episode, but one of the saddest moments is when Rebecca goes into labor on Jack's birthday and one of her triplets doesn't make it. Even though it is incredibly heartbreaking for the couple, the bright side is that they end up adopting Randall.

Kate's weight is an ongoing plotline during season one, but one of the most emotional moments from her past is when she gets completely rejected by her friends after wearing a two-piece bathing suit at the community pool. Not only do her friends tell her that she is embarrassing, but they don't even have the decency to say it her to her face.

When Randall gets high during a trip to the lodge, he starts to hallucinate his dad. Constantly feeling like he was different from everyone else growing up, he envisions his dad putting his hands on his face and confirming that no matter what, he will always be his son.

The Pearson family straight-up lied to us when they said nothing bad happens on Christmas. During their holiday get-together, Toby makes amends with Kate by showing up at her doorstep. The two have a happy reunion in the living room, until Toby grabs his chest and collapses on the floor. Oh, and did we mention this was the Winter finale? Thankfully, he makes it through, but boy did that wreck us.

After signing a lease on a two-bedroom apartment with a six-floor walk-up, Jack and Rebecca find themselves in a bind when they realize they're having triplets. To ensure that they don't have to stay with Rebecca's awful, overbearing mother, Jack swallows his pride and goes to his abusive and alcoholic father for money. Not only does he lie about having a gambling debt, but he even takes his ring off so that his dad doesn't know he's married.

Dr. K's tragic love story is one we were definitely not prepared for. During an episode completely dedicated to the birth of the triplets, we learn a little bit more about the doctor who delivered them. Having lost his wife a year before, he still finds it hard to move on. Her clothes are still in the closet and he still talks to her at the breakfast table every morning. As if that wasn't devastating enough, we really lost it when he goes to visit her grave, saying that he doesn't know how he can go on living without her.

Even though Kate is skeptical about the weight-loss retreat at first, she eventually comes around to the idea when she takes a therapeutic drum class. As she beats out her feelings, she has a flashback of her father's funeral. The scene gets incredibly intense as she lets out her frustrations, but we also learn that the Big Three were only teenagers when Jack dies.

OK, so this scene is definitely more of a happy cry. After facing a few bumps in their relationship, Jack decides to take Rebecca on a surprise trip to their first apartment. Not only does he decorate the place with twinkly lights, but he even brings along their wedding vows. As they read them aloud on the bathroom floor, flashbacks from their actual wedding play on the screen. Just when we think the two might actually work things out, Rebecca informs Jack that she might be going on tour with her band.

When Kevin finds himself in the middle of a love triangle, he goes to Toby for advice. As he tries to figure out which woman he should be with, his future brother-in-law tells him to close his eyes, picture the love of his life, and then imagine what he would say to win her back. And he does just that, only it's not Sloane or Olivia that he tries to win back. It's — surprise — his ex-wife and childhood sweetheart, Sophie.

When the stress of his work and personal life takes its toll, Randall hits a wall and has an emotional breakdown before Kevin's big opening night. He calls him up to say he won't make it, but his brother can tell something is up. Before going on stage, Kevin remembers an important pep talk he had with Miguel earlier about doing what his father, Jack, would do. So, when the lights come up, Kevin flees the scene and runs to Randall's office, where he is sitting on the floor, crying. As if that wasn't enough to make you lose it, the show takes things a step further by showing a flashback of teenage Randall having a panic attack over a school paper and Kevin completely ignoring him.

Even though we all knew it would happen eventually, the scene still left us completely devastated. After the father-son duo take a road trip to William's hometown of Memphis, he suddenly takes a bad turn and is rushed to the ER. As William slowly slips away in his hospital bed, Randall comforts him the same way his father, Jack, used to ease his anxiety by putting his hands on his face and telling him to breathe. It was gut-wrenching, to say the least.

After Jack shows up to Rebecca's opening night drunk, the two have a huge falling out when they get home. Jack claims that she's putting her career before her family, while Rebecca says that she doesn't feel fulfilled as a housewife. Even though he argues that they love each other, Rebecca isn't as convinced. As if that wasn't enough to shake you up, in the morning, Rebecca suggests that Jack stay with Miguel for a little while. Jack agrees, but not before telling Rebecca what exactly he loves about her. "You're not just my great love story, Rebecca," he says. "You are my big break, and our love story — I know it may not feel like it right now, but baby, I promise it's just getting started."

In the season two premiere, the show finally reveals how Jack dies: a house fire. During a flash-forward, Rebecca is seen driving in the car alone with Jack's personal effects in a Ziplock bag in the passenger's seat. As she pulls up to their Pearson mailbox, the camera pulls out to reveal their burnt house. Not only is Mandy Moore's performance absolutely heartbreaking as she screams in the car, but Damien Rice's cover of U2's "One," which is about having "one love" and "one life," makes it even more bittersweet.

We finally find out how the Pearson patriarch dies in the devastating episode "Super Bowl Sunday," and it's incredibly heartbreaking. After a faulty slow cooker causes the Pearson family home to go up in flames, Jack manages to save Rebecca, Randall, and Kate from the house fire, but he goes back in to save Kate's dog. Though he manages to make it out unscathed, Jack suffers from second-degree burns and smoke inhalation from the fire. Just when it seems like everything might be OK, Jack passes away in the hospital from a widowmaker heart attack. The scene when Rebecca sees Jack lying lifeless on the bed will stick with us forever.

After finally bonding with Beth and Randall, Deja has to say an emotional goodbye when she decides to live with her mother again. It's definitely bittersweet watching Randall and Beth hold back tears as she pulls out of the driveway.

During season two, Kevin goes to his darkest place yet as he battles with his addiction to painkillers. Just when we think Kevin has finally hit rock bottom, he hits a new low as he steals prescription notes from a doctor he hooked up with to buy more painkillers. He almost goes through with it when he realizes he actually left the necklace his father gave him at her house. While he breaks down on her front porch, begging her to return the necklace, we couldn't help but break down crying, too.

During the episode "Sometimes" in season three, we get a better glimpse of how Jack and Rebecca's love story began. After taking a road trip to Los Angeles together, the two share a heartfelt moment as Rebecca sings her demo in the car, and Jack breaks down in tears as he recounts his time in Vietnam.

Most of season three centers on what happens to Nicky in Vietnam, but the actual reveal is far more heartbreaking than we could have imagined. After being hostile toward Vietnamese people during the war, Nicky seems to make a connection with a little boy whom he takes fishing. However, things quickly take a turn for the worse as a grenade Nicky set off accidentally kills the kid.

While we're still not exactly sure what's wrong with Rebecca in the flash-forward, the mere sight of her in the season three finale is enough to make us shed a few tears. Not to mention the way Randall has to remind Rebecca that he's her son is incredibly emotional.
