The Biggest Celebrity Breakups of 2023 So Far

We're more than halfway through 2023 and we've witnessed a ton of shocking (and not-so-shocking) breakups among celebrity couples. The year started off with the surprising news of longtime pair Kylie Jenner and Travis Scott (who share two kids) parting ways. Following that, Reese Witherspoon and Jim Toth shocked the world in March when they announced their "difficult decision to divorce" after nearly 12 years of marriage.

While some celebrity couples this year decided to amicably separate, like AJ McLean and wife Rochelle DeAnna McLean and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Sophie Trudeau, other splits have played out quite messily in the news. Perhaps most notable is the explosive breakup of "Vanderpump Rules" stars Tom Sandoval and Ariana Madix, plus the fallout that followed after the former's cheating affair with their costar Raquel Leviss; the entire debacle was dubbed "Scandoval." Next to them is Avril Lavigne and Mod Sun, as the latter's rep informed POPSUGAR on Feb. 21 that their split was "news to him" because they were "together and engaged as of three days ago when Mod left for tour." Shortly after they broke up, Lavigne was linked to Tyga.

There have been a few other unexpected celebrity breakups in 2023 as well. On July 17, People reported that Ariana Grande and her husband, Dalton Gomez, had separated earlier this year after two years of marriage. That same day, news broke about Sofía Vergara and Joe Manganiello divorcing after seven years of marriage. And in August, Sam Asghari filed for divorce from Britney Spears after 14 months of marriage. In September, Joe Jonas filed for divorce from Sophie Turner after four years of marriage, and in October, Jodie Turner-Smith also filed for divorce from Joshua Jackson after four years of marriage. But they aren't the only stars who've called it quits this year.

Scroll ahead for other memorable celebrity breakups that have happened so far in 2023.

On July 17, People reported that the singer and real estate agent had separated after two years of marriage. They were first linked in February 2020 before going public with their romance that May in Grande's "Stuck With U" music video featuring Justin Bieber. The two then got engaged that December before tying the knot in a "tiny and intimate" ceremony in May 2021.

They shared, "As two people that love and care for one another very much, we politely ask for respect of our privacy at this time as we navigate this new phase of our lives."

Previously, Vergara was married to Joe González, with whom she shares a son. She was also engaged to businessman Nick Loeb in 2012, but they split two years later.

Eilish and Rutherford called it quits on their relationship after less than a year of dating, the former's rep confirmed to People on May 17. "We can confirm Billie and Jesse did split amicably and remain good friends," Eilish's rep said. "All cheating rumors are false. Both are currently single."

The former couple were first linked in October 2022 and went Instagram official on Halloween that year. A few days later, they made their red carpet debut as a couple at the LACMA Art+Film Gala in their famous matching Gucci outfits. They were last seen together at Coachella in April 2023.

On June 17, Spelling and McDermott reportedly separated after 17 years of marriage, per People, with the latter announcing the news in a since-deleted Instagram post. "It's with great sadness and a very very heavy heart that after 18 years together and 5 amazing children, that @torispelling and I have decided to go our separate ways, and start a new journey of our own," McDermott wrote in a caption. "We will continue to work together as loving parents and guide and love our children through this difficult time. We ask that you all respect our privacy as we take this time to surround our family with love and work our way through this. Thank you all for your support and kindness."

The former couple got married on May 7, 2006, and later renewed their vows on May 8, 2010. Together, they share five children: daughters Stella and Hattie and sons Liam, Finn, and Beau.

Romance rumors swarmed the "Speak Now" singer and The 1975's musician back in May after they were spotted out together on multiple occasions. However, all speculation came to a halt on June 5 when a source told Entertainment Tonight that the two had ended their brief relationship. "Taylor and Matty broke up," the insider shared. "They are both extremely busy and realized they're not really compatible with each other." They added, "Taylor's friends want what's best for her and aren't shocked that their relationship fizzled out since she recently got out of a long-term relationship," referencing her reported split with longtime boyfriend Joe Alwyn (more on that ahead).

On July 6, the famed singer and his husband announced in a joint statement on Instagram that they were divorcing after six years of marriage. "For some time, we have considered transforming our relationship, and it is after careful consideration that we have decided to end our marriage with love, respect, and dignity for our children preserving and honoring what we have experienced as a couple all of these wonderful years," they wrote. "Our greatest desire now is to continue having a healthy family dynamic and a relationship centered on our genuine friendship as we continue the joint upbringing of our children." They concluded their statement by saying, "As always, we thank you for all the love and support we received throughout our marriage. We are united in nurturing this new chapter of our lives."

Martin and Yosef first connected through Instagram in 2015 before they met IRL six months later in London. They got engaged in 2016 and tied the knot two years later before welcoming two children together: daughter Lucia and son Renn. Martin also has twins Matteo and Valentino, who were born via surrogate.

Porter and Smith first met in 2009 and dated for a year before splitting up. Five years later, they rekindled their romance and tied the knot on Jan. 14, 2017, just 16 days after Porter proposed. However, on July 5, Porter's rep Simon Halls confirmed to People that the actor and the men's swimwear designer "have made the sad decision to end their marriage after six years." He added, "The decision was an amicable and mutual one and was made after much consideration. They continue to love and support each other as they embark on this next chapter. There will be no further comment from either parties and it would be appreciated if their privacy be respected."

Tom Sandoval and Ariana Madix

The "Vanderpump Rules" stars' breakup has been dubbed one of the biggest celebrity scandals of the year so far because, unlike other famous pairs, their split wasn't at all amicable. In fact, their relationship came to an end after TMZ broke the news of Sandoval's affair with Raquel Leviss on March 3. The fallout was so massive, Bravo filmed additional footage of it for the end of "Vanderpump Rules" season 10 and aired an explosive three-part reunion, where Sandoval, Madix, and Leviss all came face to face to address their issues.

In the weeks following Sandoval and Madix's public breakup, many updates about the former's affair were reported, including the fuzzy timeline of when it allegedly began and when Sandoval claims it started. In a March 8 Instagram statement, he apologized to his ex-girlfriend Madix for making "reckless decisions that hurt somebody I love." Madix then issued her own statement on Instagram on March 16, thanking friends, family, and fans "for the outpouring of love and support." She ended with, "What doesn't kill me better run."

The two reality-TV stars have since moved on from their relationship, with Madix being linked to fitness coach Daniel Wai in April. It's unclear if Sandoval is still seeing Leviss or if he's currently dating someone else.

Halsey and Alev Aydin

On April 25, a source confirmed to POPSUGAR that Halsey and their longtime partner, Alev Aydin, had split amicably. As part of the breakup, the singer also requested full physical custody of their son, Ender (born on July 14, 2021), with a request for visitation for Aydin, per Los Angeles County court documents obtained by POPSUGAR.

In October 2020, Halsey told Allure of the couple's romance, "Alev and I have been really good friends for four years. And when the stars aligned, our relationship became romantic and it was pretty evident that he and I were both like, 'Oh, my gosh! You're the person I'm supposed to start a family with.' A lot of people had opinions about that."

Jenner and Scott were in an on-and-off relationship for roughly six years: they broke up, got back together, and welcomed two kids together (Stormi and Aire) in that time. They started dating in 2017 before their first child arrived the following year; they then broke up for the first time in 2019. By 2020, the pair had rekindled their romance, and they welcomed their son two years later. But it seems they called it quits for good when Us Weekly reported on Jan. 7, via a source, that the two "are off again." "They were supposed to spend the holidays together, but she went to Aspen to be with her family and friends up there," the insider added. "This has happened so many times before, they're known to be on again off again, but always remain friends and great coparents."

Taylor Swift and Joe Alwyn

Before starting her romance with Healy, Swift was in a long-term relationship with actor and songwriter Joe Alwyn for six years before their breakup was reported by ET in April. At the time, a source told the outlet the longtime couple had parted ways "a few weeks ago." ET also reported that the split was amicable and "was not dramatic." "The relationship had just run its course. It's why [Alwyn] hasn't been spotted at any shows," an insider said of his absence at Swift's Eras Tour stops.

Swift and Alwyn started dating back in 2016 after they reportedly met at the Met Gala that year. They mostly kept their relationship quiet over the years, occasionally commenting on their romance in interviews. Most notably, Alwyn helped Swift write some of her songs on her "Folklore," "Evermore," and "Midnights" albums under the pseudonym William Bowery.

On April 26, ET reported that the longtime couple had amicably split earlier that month after three years of dating. But according to People, that wasn't the first time the two had called it quits. "Gigi and Glen had broken up several times," a source told the outlet. "They had been on the rocks since 'Top Gun: [Maverick]' came out. Gigi was never happy with the long distance filming and when she came to Australia [where Powell was filming 'Anyone But You' with Sydney Sweeney] they both decided to break up for good."

The Backstreet Boys singer and the hairstylist started dating in early 2009 and tied the knot in December 2011. However, on March 27, the pair announced that after 11 years of marriage, they had pressed pause on their relationship. "Marriage is hard, but worth it. We have mutually decided to separate temporarily to work on ourselves and on our marriage with the hope of building a stronger future," the pair told POPSUGAR in a joint statement after TMZ initially broke the news. "The plan is to come back together and continue to nurture our love for one another, and our family. We ask for respect and privacy at this time. Separation is hard enough without the commentary, please be kind and remember there are children involved."

Cher and Edwards were one of the more surprising pairings of 2022, starting romance rumors in November of that year before engagement speculation began just a month later. The two were spotted out numerous times and seemed to still be going strong as recently as March, when they made their red carpet couple debut. However, on May 1, E! News confirmed that the pair had broken up just a few weeks prior. Their split was reportedly amicable.

The ex-couple, who were married for nearly 12 years, announced on March 24 — two days before their wedding anniversary — that they had decided to separate. The two, who share a son named Tennessee, revealed the news in a joint statement from a since-deleted Instagram post that read, "It is with a great deal of care and consideration that we have made the difficult decision to divorce. We have enjoyed so many wonderful years together and are moving forward with deep love, kindness and mutual respect for everything we have created together."

The statement continued, "Our biggest priority is our son and our entire family as we navigate this next chapter. These matters are never easy and are extremely personal. We truly appreciate everyone's respect for our family's privacy at this time."

Before Toth, Witherspoon was married to ex-husband Ryan Phillippe, with whom she shares two kids, daughter Ava and son Deacon.

The model and the comedian first sparked dating speculation on Jan. 25 when they were spotted out in New York City (and a few times in the weeks that followed). They seemingly went public with their relationship on Valentine's Day, when Andre posted a few NSFW photos of them on Instagram, but E! News reported their brief fling had already ended quietly by then. Per a March 15 report, an insider told the outlet that Ratajkowski "broke up with Eric days before he posted that photo" and "had nothing to do with the posting."

On Feb. 21, Lavigne's rep confirmed in a statement to POPSUGAR that the pair had broken up after two years together. They were first linked in February 2021 before Sun proposed to his then-girlfriend in March 2022. Lavigne's rep didn't provide explicit details about the pair's breakup, but a source close to the former couple told People at the time that "Avril and Mod Sun have been on and off for the past two months" and called off their engagement.

However, that same day, Sun's rep told POPSUGAR that the pair "were together and engaged as of three days ago when Mod left for tour so if anything has changed that's news to him." Sun kicked off his "God Save the Teen" Tour in Sacramento, CA, on Feb. 19.

Following their split, Lavigne started dating Tyga, whom she's still linked to despite breakup speculation that swirled in late June. Sun, meanwhile, appears to still be single.

On Sept. 6, Jonas and Turner posted a joint statement to Instagram that read, "After four years of marriage, we have mutually decided to amicably end our marriage. On Sept. 17, singer, actor, dancer, and choreographer Teyana Taylor announced via Instagram that she and her NBA player husband, Iman Shumpert, are separated. The couple were together for 10 years and married for seven of them. In her Instagram post, Taylor clarified that she and Shumpert have been separated for some time, but that they remain friends and a "hell of a team" when it comes to co-parenting their two kids, Iman Tayla Shumpert Jr., 7, and Rue Rose Shumpert, 3.

Taylor's full announcement read: "AHT AHT! Not too much on my bestie! In all fairness, Iman and I are separated and have been for a while. To be 1000% clear, 'infidelity' ain't one of the reasons for our departure. We are still the best of friends, great business partners and are one hell of a team when it comes to co-parenting our 2 beautiful children. Most importantly we are FAMILY & in the 10yrs together, 7yrs married we ain't ever played with or about THAT. We just keep y'all asses out the group chat lol, which is the reason we've been able to successfully & peacefully separate without all of the outside noise. The only reason I'm even sharing THIS part of the chat is because the narratives are getting a little out of hand & it's unfair to all parties involved. I hope this provided some clarity for y'all. Okay AunTey taking y'all back out the chat bye! 😘❤️🌹."

Asghari filed for divorce from Spears after one year of marriage in August. In court documents obtained by POPSUGAR, Asghari listed their date of separation as July 28, 2023. He also cited "irreconcilable differences" as the reason for their split and is seeking spousal support.

Asghari later addressed the split on his Instagram Stories, writing, "After 6 years of love and commitment to each other my wife and I have decided to end our journey together. We will hold onto the love and respect we have for each other and I wish her the best always. Sh*t happens. Asking for privacy seems rediculous [sic] so I will just ask for everyone including media to be kind and thoughtful."

Asghari's rep also told POPSUGAR, "There are many claims that Sam is challenging the prenup and threatening to exploit his ex-wife with videos. However, all these claims are false, as no negative intention has ever been directed towards her and never will be. Sam has always and will always support her."
